What are the main applications of PET?

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is one of the plastics among others that are used in our day-to-day lives. It is an important commercial polymer used in several applications ranging from packaging, fabrics, molded parts for automotive, electronics, mini liquor bottles in wholesale... and many more.

However, PET resin is predominantly used for making water and soda bottles and unique packaging by the bottle suppliers. As per the records, an estimated 95% of the plastic goes into making bottles for various applications and the rest is used for manufacturing sheets, straps, and other packaging applications.

Plastic is often a more efficient material to choose from than other alternatives. That's because plastic is incredibly energy efficient to wholesalers of plastic bottles and mini liquor bottles. After all, they are lighter than other alternative materials.

 What is PET plastic?

PET is a thermoplastic polymer that is clear, tough and has good gas and moisture barrier properties. This plastic polymer is known for its excellent combination of properties such as mechanical, thermal, chemical resistance as well as dimensional stability. Here are some of the benefits of using PET plastic for packaging and bottles:

  1. Since it is lightweight, it is cost-effective to produce and requires less energy to transport.
  2. Shatterproof and scratch-proof means it is safe and does not cause a hazard if broken or damaged.
  3. Because these are safe and lightweight, these are the most convenient way for on-the-go consumption.
  4. Re-sealable and re-used, it is suitable for multiple-serve packs.
  5. It is 100% recyclable as it can be used over and over again.
  6. Manufactured using sustainable methods, with the increased consumption PET plastic bottles are made from recycled plastic.
  7. It is used for unique packaging needs when brands want to increase their visibility.
  8. It can be molded into different shapes and sizes, enabling different brands to use them to build visibility among other competitors.
  9. Manufacturers can work freely with this material, and can easily switch from one shape to another in no time.

PET use in food packaging

You may have seen the number 1 on the bottom or side of the PET plastic packaging or bottle. This number is the plastic 'resin identification code', also known as the recycling number. These numbers from 1 to 7 also provide guidance for consumers who want to recycle plastic containers. Most major types of plastics, including PET, can be recycled. PET is commonly used in the food packaging for sports drinks, soft drinks, single-serves, ketchup, salad dressings, and peanut butter containers. It is FDA-approved for food contact. All the packaging used by the soft drinks industry is strictly regulated and must comply with the rules and regulations set by the FDA.

Moreover, in the food packaging and bottling applications, there are various sub-categories based on end-use.

Other applications of PET

PET's high mechanical strength makes the films and straps ideal for use in the taping application. These straps are highly used in packaging, baling, and for various other applications in industries. However, only a small percentage goes into the production of these PET straps but these are a very convenient alternative to metal wires and other such packaging aids.

Perfectly fit for binding large volumes together, these feature an excellent performance when it comes to the packaging of products stored outdoors as PET is resistant to high temperatures and UV radiations. For consumer products, pharmaceuticals, food, and beverages, engineering items, PET sheets are also used in a range of products. For instance, if you go grocery shopping often, then you must be familiar with the small containers fruits come in with transparent packaging which is typically made of PET sheets. Other packaging applications include rigid plastic water bottles, microwaveable containers, transparent films to cover food items, etc.
